Lesson

4 of 5 in Unit 4: Online Conflict

When You're the Target

6-8th Grades
45 min

Summary

Clapping back at a cyberbully feels like justice, but it usually backfires and prolongs the conflict. Students master the D.B.R.T. protocol—Document, Block, Report, Tell—and practice deciding who to loop in, from parents to police, across a set of real-world scenarios.

Activities

Bellringer: Why Kids Don't Tell

  • Pose the bellringer question and let students respond individually before sharing out
  • Push students to name real barriers to telling an adult, not just the obvious ones
5 min

Instruction

  • Walk through why retaliating against a cyberbully backfires
  • Teach each step of D.B.R.T. in order, pausing on Document since timing matters most
  • Cover the difference between reportable rule violations and simple disagreement
10 min

Discussion: Who Ya Gonna Call?

  • Present each scenario one at a time and have students commit to an answer before revealing it
  • Debrief why some situations need police, some need school, and some need no escalation at all
10 min

Activity: Cyberbullying Game & Vocab

  • Students complete the cyberbullying game
  • Students practice vocabulary
15 min
